Frequently Asked Questions
What are the planetary positions today in Vedic astrology?
This page shows the current sidereal positions of all nine Vedic planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu) using the Lahiri ayanamsa. Sidereal positions differ from Western tropical positions by approximately 24 degrees.
How often do planetary positions change?
The Moon changes sign roughly every 2.25 days and nakshatra approximately every day. The Sun moves through one sign per month. Mercury and Venus change signs every 2-4 weeks. Mars takes about 45 days per sign. Jupiter spends roughly a year in each sign, and Saturn takes about 2.5 years. Rahu and Ketu move backward through one sign in about 18 months.
What is the difference between sidereal and tropical positions?
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is aligned with the actual constellations. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the vernal equinox. The difference (called ayanamsa) is currently about 24 degrees. A planet at 5 degrees Aries in tropical would be around 11 degrees Pisces in sidereal.
