About Kalmanas

A free Vedic astrology engine built on classical Parashari methods and the Swiss Ephemeris. No guesswork, no generic horoscopes - just precise planetary calculations and time-tested interpretation frameworks.

What is Kalmanas?

Kalmanas is a free, open-access Vedic astrology platform that generates birth charts (Kundali), calculates Vimshottari Dasha timelines, identifies planetary yogas, and computes daily muhurtha windows. Every calculation uses the Swiss Ephemeris library for sub-arcsecond planetary positions and the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa adopted by the Indian government.

The platform serves students learning Jyotish fundamentals, practitioners verifying chart calculations, and individuals exploring their birth chart for the first time. All features are completely free with no paywall, no signup requirement for basic usage, and no limits on chart generation.

Calculation Methodology

Every planetary position on Kalmanas is computed using the Swiss Ephemeris, the same astronomical library used by research institutions worldwide. The Swiss Ephemeris provides planetary longitudes accurate to under one arcsecond for dates between 5400 BCE and 5400 CE.

Chart interpretation follows the Parashari system as codified in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, supplemented by principles from Brihat Jataka (Varahamihira), Saravali (Kalyanavarma), and Phaladeepika (Mantreswara). Dasha calculations use the Vimshottari system with standard 120-year cycle. Yoga detection follows classical combination rules from these same texts.

Swiss Ephemeris

Sub-arcsecond planetary positions for all nine Vedic grahas. Covers 10,800 years of astronomical data.

Lahiri Ayanamsa

The Chitrapaksha ayanamsa officially adopted by the Indian government and used by most North Indian astrologers.

Vimshottari Dasha

The most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology. 120-year cycle with 9 planetary periods based on Moon nakshatra.

Muhurtha Engine

Real-time auspicious timing windows computed from panchanga elements: tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga, and karana.

Classical Text Sources

Kalmanas draws interpretation frameworks from four foundational Jyotish texts, cross-referenced for accuracy:

  • Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra - The primary source for Parashari astrology. Covers planetary dignities, house significations, dasha systems, and yoga formations. Attributed to Sage Parashara.
  • Brihat Jataka - Written by Varahamihira (6th century CE). Defines planetary strengths, aspects, and predictive principles used across all Jyotish traditions.
  • Saravali - Composed by Kalyanavarma. Provides detailed planet-in-house and planet-in-sign interpretations referenced throughout the platform.
  • Phaladeepika - Written by Mantreswara. A concise yet comprehensive text covering yogas, dashas, and transit effects.

What Kalmanas Covers

The platform generates complete North Indian and South Indian style birth charts with all nine grahas (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) placed across 12 houses. Each chart includes a detailed personality profile based on lagna (ascendant), Moon sign, and nakshatra placement.

Beyond the birth chart, Kalmanas computes Vimshottari Dasha timelines showing major planetary periods and sub-periods for the next several decades. The yoga detection engine identifies 30+ classical yoga combinations from Gajakesari to Viparita Raja Yoga. The muhurtha tool shows daily auspicious windows based on real-time panchanga calculations.

The reference library includes detailed pages for all 27 nakshatras, 12 zodiac signs, 12 houses, 9 planetary dashas, 108 planet-in-house combinations, 108 planet-in-sign combinations, and 1,296 planet-in-house-by-ascendant interpretations - over 3,700 pages of Vedic astrology reference content available in English and Hindi.

Built by Practitioners

Kalmanas was created by a team that combines software engineering with years of Jyotish study. The platform exists because we found that most free astrology tools online either use inaccurate ephemeris data, apply Western tropical calculations to Vedic interpretations, or lock basic features behind paywalls.

We built Kalmanas to be the tool we wanted: accurate planetary calculations, classical Parashari interpretation, clean interface, no cost. Every interpretation on the platform is reviewed against the classical texts listed above. When sources disagree, we note the variation rather than presenting one view as definitive.
