Quick Facts

The Vimshottari Mahadasha is the primary timing system of Vedic astrology: a fixed 120-year cycle of nine planetary periods whose starting point is set by the Moon’s nakshatra at birth. This calculator computes the Moon’s exact sidereal degree, derives the balance of the first dasha, and lays out every Mahadasha and Antardasha with start and end dates. The current period is highlighted in the life timing section of your result. All calculations are free, with no account required.

What Is a Mahadasha (Vimshottari Dasha)?

A Mahadasha is a major planetary period in the Vimshottari Dasha system, the timing framework Jyotish uses to predict when the promises of a birth chart manifest as events. The nine planets rule fixed spans totaling 120 years, always in the same order: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Where the cycle starts is personal, determined by the nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth. During a planet’s Mahadasha, the areas of life that planet rules and occupies in the natal chart move to the foreground.

Classical Jyotish treats the birth chart as a map of potential and the dasha system as the calendar that schedules it. A powerful career yoga in the chart may lie dormant for decades and then deliver visibly when the Mahadasha of a participating planet begins. Conversely, a challenging placement matters most during the period of the planet involved. This is why two people with similar charts can have very different lives: their dasha clocks started at different points.

The word Vimshottari means one hundred and twenty; the full cycle covers 120 years, so most people experience five to seven Mahadashas in a lifetime. The sequence never reorders. If you are in a Saturn Mahadasha, Mercury always follows, then Ketu, then Venus, and so on.

How the Mahadasha Calculator Works

The calculator computes the Moon’s exact sidereal longitude at your birth moment using the Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa, identifies which of the 27 nakshatras the Moon occupies, and assigns the first Mahadasha to that nakshatra’s ruling planet. The Moon’s fractional progress through the nakshatra sets the balance of dasha, the portion of that first period remaining at birth. The remaining periods then follow the fixed Vimshottari order, and each Mahadasha is subdivided into nine Antardashas proportional to the planets’ period lengths.

1

Compute the Moon's Sidereal Position

Your birth date, time, and place fix the Moon's position to the arc second. The timezone in effect at your birth, including historical daylight saving rules, is resolved automatically from the birthplace.

2

Identify the Birth Nakshatra

The zodiac divides into 27 nakshatras of 13 degrees 20 minutes each. The nakshatra holding the Moon determines your starting dasha lord. The same nakshatra's pada (quarter) also sets the Moon's navamsa position, which refines interpretation.

3

Derive the Balance of Dasha

The Moon's fractional progress through the nakshatra is multiplied by the dasha lord's full span to find how much of the first period remains. Born one third of the way through a Saturn-ruled nakshatra, you begin life with about 12.7 of Saturn's 19 years left.

4

Lay Out 120 Years of Periods

The full sequence of Mahadashas and their Antardashas is generated with calendar dates. The period containing today is highlighted as your current dasha, with its sub-period and the time remaining in each.

The dates use the standard Vimshottari year. Small differences between calculators usually trace to the ayanamsa choice or to rounding of the Moon's degree; Kalmanas uses Lahiri, the ayanamsa adopted by the Indian national calendar committee and the default in classical practice.

How to Read Your Mahadasha Result

Read a dasha timeline in three passes. First, note the current Mahadasha lord and find that planet in your natal chart: its sign, house, dignity, and the houses it rules define the agenda of this chapter. Second, note the current Antardasha lord and its relationship to the Mahadasha lord; harmonious lords give the period a consistent tone, while conflicting lords produce a push and pull. Third, look ahead to the next period boundary, since the themes of a new dasha typically build in during its opening year.

The most common beginner mistake is reading a dasha as if the planet carried a fixed script: Saturn always hard, Venus always pleasant. In practice the dasha lord behaves according to its natal condition. A debilitated Venus ruling difficult houses can preside over a taxing 20 years; a dignified Saturn in an angle can preside over the most constructive stretch of a career. The per-period explanations in your result account for the lord's actual placement in your chart.

For the sub-period level, the classical rule is that the Antardasha lord delivers results consistent with its relationship to the Mahadasha lord and with its own natal promise. The dasha library includes profiles for every Mahadasha and Antardasha combination, from Venus-Rahu to Ketu-Mercury.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the Mahadasha calculator: how the current dasha is found, what Antardashas are, how birth time affects the dates, and how to judge whether a period will be favorable.

How do I find my current Mahadasha?

Enter your birth date, time, and place in the Mahadasha calculator above. The engine computes the Moon's exact sidereal position, identifies its birth nakshatra, and derives the complete 120-year Vimshottari Dasha sequence from that anchor. Your current Mahadasha and Antardasha appear in the life timing section of the result, along with the start and end dates of every period, past and future.

What is a Mahadasha in Vedic astrology?

A Mahadasha is a major planetary period in the Vimshottari Dasha system, the primary timing technique of Jyotish. Each of the nine planets rules a fixed span: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, and Mercury 17, totaling 120 years. During a planet's Mahadasha, the themes signified by that planet in your natal chart become the dominant storyline of life. The sequence is fixed; only the starting point varies, set by the Moon's nakshatra at birth.

What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?

The Mahadasha is the major period; the Antardasha (also called Bhukti) is the sub-period running inside it. Every Mahadasha is divided among all nine planets in the same fixed order, proportionally to their period lengths. The Mahadasha lord sets the broad chapter of life; the Antardasha lord colors the current scene within that chapter. Predictive work in Jyotish reads the two lords together, checking their natal placements, mutual relationship, and transits.

How accurate is the Mahadasha calculator? Does birth time matter?

The planetary computation uses the Swiss Ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the same precision standard used in professional Jyotish software. Birth time matters because the dasha sequence is anchored to the Moon's exact degree: the Moon moves about 13 degrees per day, so an error of a few hours shifts the balance of the first dasha by months. If your birth time is uncertain by more than an hour, treat dasha boundary dates as approximate, and consider birth time rectification.

Which Mahadasha is good and which is difficult?

No Mahadasha is universally good or bad. A period's quality depends on the dasha lord's condition in your natal chart: its sign dignity, house placement, house lordships, aspects, and the yogas it participates in. Jupiter Mahadasha can be difficult for a chart where Jupiter rules challenging houses and sits debilitated; Saturn Mahadasha can be the most productive period of life when Saturn is dignified and well placed. The calculator links each of your periods to a detailed profile of that dasha lord.

When does my Mahadasha change, and will I feel it?

The result shows the exact end date of your current Mahadasha and the start of the next. Transitions are usually felt gradually: the closing year of a long period (called dasha chidra) often carries a sense of completion or unwinding, and the opening year of the new period introduces its themes. The shift is most noticeable when the two dasha lords differ sharply in nature, for example moving from a 20-year Venus period into a 6-year Sun period.

What is the balance of dasha at birth?

You are born partway through the Mahadasha of the planet ruling your birth nakshatra. The Moon's fractional progress through that nakshatra determines how much of the period remains. A person born with the Moon three quarters of the way through a Venus-ruled nakshatra starts life with roughly 5 of Venus's 20 years remaining, then proceeds to the Sun Mahadasha. This is why two people with the same Rashi can be in completely different dashas.
