What is Panchang?

Panchang comes from two Sanskrit words: pancha (five) and anga (limb). It is the five-limbed Vedic almanac that describes the quality of each day through five timekeeping elements. These five elements together determine whether a given hour is suitable for a wedding, a business launch, travel, a medical procedure, or any other important action.

Unlike a Western calendar, which tracks only clock time and weekdays, a Panchang tracks the Moon’s precise position and its angular relationship to the Sun at every moment. Because the Moon’s position shifts continuously, a Panchang is not fixed, its values change throughout the day, and they differ by city because they are calculated from local sunrise and sunset. This is why Rahu Kaal timing in Delhi is different from Rahu Kaal in Chennai or Mumbai.

Panchang has been used in India for over 2,000 years and remains the primary reference for choosing auspicious muhurat timing today, religious observances, and daily planning.

The Five Elements of Panchang

Each element answers a different question about the day’s energy.

1

Tithi Lunar Day

The lunar day (Tithi) is one of 30 phases in the Moon's cycle,15 in the waxing fortnight (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the waning fortnight (Krishna Paksha). Each Tithi carries a distinct quality: Pratipada (1st) favors beginnings; Purnima (full moon) is broadly auspicious; Amavasya (new moon) is reserved for ancestral rites. A Tithi lasts anywhere from 19 to 26 hours because it tracks the Moon's angular distance from the Sun (each 12° = one Tithi), not a fixed clock interval.

2

Nakshatra Lunar Mansion

The Moon transits one of 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions) each day, spending roughly 54 hours in each. The Nakshatra determines the Moon’s energy quality, whether the day is sharp (Tikshna), fixed (Sthira), movable (Chara), or swift (Laghu),directly affecting which activities are favored. Your Janma Nakshatra (birth nakshatra) defines your Mahadasha sequence and is the most important single factor in Vedic chart reading. Calculate your birth chart to find yours.

3

Yoga Sun–Moon Combination

Panchang Yoga is calculated by adding the longitudes of the Sun and Moon and dividing by 13°20'. This gives one of 27 Yogas, ranging from highly auspicious (Siddha, Amrita, Shubha) to inauspicious (Vyaghata, Ganda, Vyatipata, Vaidhriti). Yoga changes approximately once per day and acts as an overlay modifier on the day's overall quality.

4

Karana Half Lunar Day

A Karana is half a Tithi, roughly 6 hours. There are 11 Karanas in total: 4 fixed (Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna) and 7 repeating (Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Garaja, Vanija, Vishti). Vishti, also called Bhadra,is the most inauspicious Karana and should be avoided for new beginnings, travel, and signing agreements.

5

Vara Weekday

The weekday (Vara) is ruled by a planet in the classical Chaldean sequence: Sunday (Sun), Monday (Moon), Tuesday (Mars), Wednesday (Mercury), Thursday (Jupiter), Friday (Venus), Saturday (Saturn). The weekday ruler colors the day's baseline energy. Thursday (Jupiter) favors learning, teaching, and expansion; Saturday (Saturn) suits slow, careful work over new ventures.

Key Timing Windows

Beyond the five elements, every Panchang lists specific time windows to seek out or avoid.

Rahu Kaal

A ~90-minute window each day considered inauspicious for starting new activities. It is calculated by dividing daylight into 8 equal parts and assigning the Rahu slot by weekday: Monday 7th, Tuesday 2nd, Wednesday 5th, Thursday 6th, Friday 4th, Saturday 3rd, Sunday 8th. Because it depends on local sunrise, Rahu Kaal timing in Delhi today differs from Rahu Kaal in Chennai by up to 90 minutes.

Abhijit Muhurat

The most universally auspicious ~48-minute window, straddling local noon. Called Abhijit (“victorious”), it is powerful enough to nullify most doshas. If you need a safe window for an important action but cannot perform a full muhurta analysis today, Abhijit Muhurat is the default recommendation.

Choghadiya

A secondary timing system that divides daytime and nighttime each into 8 equal segments, each ruled by a planet with a named quality: Amrit and Shubh are most favorable; Char is good for travel; Kaal and Rog are inauspicious for new starts. Choghadiya is used for quick decisions when a full muhurta calculation is not practical.

How to Read a Panchang

Six steps to turn raw Panchang data into a practical decision.

  1. 1Check the Tithi

Identify whether it is Shukla or Krishna Paksha and what type of Tithi it is (Nanda, Bhadra, Jaya, Rikta, or Purna). Rikta Tithis (4th, 9th, 14th) are generally avoided for auspicious starts.

  2. 2Read the Nakshatra

Identify the Moon's current Nakshatra and its Gana (nature). Tikshna Nakshatras favor sharp or decisive actions; Sthira Nakshatras favor long-term starts; Laghu and Chara Nakshatras favor travel and short tasks.

  3. 3Note the Yoga

If the Yoga is listed as inauspicious (Vyatipata, Vaidhriti, Ganda, Vyaghata), avoid initiating important new ventures. Siddha, Amrita, and Shubha Yogas give the day extra strength.

  4. 4Check Karana

If the current Karana is Vishti (Bhadra), postpone new starts until it passes. Vishti cycles through the day so it usually clears within a few hours.

  5. 5Mark Rahu Kaal

Block out the Rahu Kaal window for your city. Do not start new tasks, sign documents, or travel during this period.

  6. 6Use Abhijit or Choghadiya

If you need a positive window, aim for Abhijit Muhurat (around noon) or an Amrit / Shubh Choghadiya slot. Both are visible on every daily Panchang page.

Every Kalmanas Panchang page shows all six of these elements plus a pre-computed “Is Today Good For…” summary, so you do not need to apply the rules manually.

Panchang vs Horoscope,What’s the Difference?

A horoscope (Kundli) is a birth chart,a frozen map of the sky at your exact moment of birth. It describes your personality, karmic patterns, and life trajectory. It does not change; it is your personal cosmic fingerprint, calculated once from your date, time, and place of birth.

A Panchang is the opposite: it describes today, not you. It tells you the quality of the current moment, which hours are auspicious, which windows to avoid, and which activities align with the Moon’s current position. Where your horoscope is your what, Panchang is your when.

In practice they work together. A skilled astrologer uses your horoscope to identify which activities are supported by your chart, then uses Panchang to choose the most auspicious moment to initiate them. Calculating your birth chart is the first step; reading today’s Panchang is how you act on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Panchang?
Panchang (from Sanskrit pancha-anga, meaning "five limbs") is the Vedic almanac that records five timekeeping elements for each day: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (Sun-Moon longitude combination), Karana (half lunar day), and Vara (weekday). Together they determine which hours and activities are auspicious.
Why do Panchang timings differ by city?
Tithi, Nakshatra, and other Panchang elements change based on local sunrise and sunset, which varies by latitude and longitude. Rahu Kaal is calculated directly from local day length, so it shifts by up to 90 minutes between cities.
What is the most inauspicious time in Panchang?
Rahu Kaal,a roughly 90-minute daily window,is the most universally avoided. Vishti Karana (also called Bhadra) and certain inauspicious Yogas like Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are also to be avoided for important new starts.
What is the best time to start something important?
Abhijit Muhurat (the ~48-minute window around local noon) is the default safe window when a full muhurta analysis is not possible. For planned events, combine the Nakshatra quality, Tithi type, Choghadiya, and absence of Rahu Kaal for a complete picture.
What is the difference between Panchang and a horoscope?
A horoscope is a birth chart,a snapshot of the sky at your birth moment used for personal prediction. Panchang is a daily almanac that describes the quality of each day and hour, used for muhurta (auspicious timing of actions). They complement each other: your horoscope tells you what is possible; Panchang tells you when to act.
How often do Panchang elements change?
Vara (weekday) changes daily at sunrise. Tithi, Nakshatra, and Yoga each change roughly once per day, though they can occasionally change twice in a single day. Karana changes every half-tithi, approximately every 6–12 hours.
